Foster + Partners has been shortlisted in a design competition to revamp the ground area near the 630ft Gateway Arch in Missouri, US.

The practice will provide formal designs for the proposed revamp of the grounds to make it accessible to pedestrians and a new expanded park fronting the East St Louis River.

Foster + Partners has teamed up with the US-based PWP Landscape Architecture and Civitas to compete with five other teams, which include SOM, Behnisch Architekten and Steven Holl Architects who are the finalists in the design competition.

The final winner will be chosen in September and construction is expected to complete by 2015.

The arch is the tallest monument in the US. It was designed by Saarinen and structural engineer Hannskarl Bandel in 1947.
