LEED Gold certification has been awarded to the new Connecticut Science Center in Hartford, US, by the US Green Building Council.
Groundbreaking at the centre took place in 2005 and the scheme was completed last year.
Connecticut Science Center president and CEO Matt Fleury said that having a facility that made a minimal impact on the surrounding environment was one of the main goals on the construction of the centre.
In December 2009, the centre became the nation’s first to generate the majority of its power onsite. It uses a hydrogen fuel cell made by UTC Power.
