Plans to build a 16-storey new university centre for the New School, a university in New York City, US, have been approved by the board of trustees.
Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the $353m campus building will be located on a site between 13th and 14th streets in lower Manhattan.
The 354,000ft² scheme will also include new academic spaces, an auditorium, a central university library and a dormitory with a separate entrance on fifth avenue.
The facade will feature horizontal and diagonal bands of glass on the sides of the building.
In collaboration with developer Durst Organization, Tishman construction and SLCE architects, which designed dormitory interiors for the scheme, construction will begin in August this year.
The centre has been designed to earn LEED gold certification and will employ many energy and water efficient strategies.
The building is expected to be complete in 2013.
