Preparatory work has begun on the much-delayed stadium in Barton, UK, for Salford City Reds Rugby League Club.

Buckingham Group Contracting is working on the 70 acre site after it won a £4m ($5.9m) contract awarded by Salford City Council and funded by the Northwest Regional Development Agency.

The £26m ($38m) stadium is being delivered by a joint venture company formed by the council and property developer Peel Holdings.

Council planners will work on the detailed proposals in August and construction is expected to begin in October.

The 15,000-seat scheme is expected to be completed by 2011.
