A $500m renovation of the famous Brooklyn Bridge in New York, US, has begun.

The project will involve completely repainting and repairing elements of the 1.1-mile bridge, expected to be complete by 2014.

The project has secured $30m from federal funds, while the rest has been secured from city and other federal sources, according to the Associated Press.

The bridge, which features two neo-Gothic towers and elegant steel cables, was designed by engineer John Augustus Roebling and opened in 1883 following its $15m construction.
