HGA Architects and Engineers has unveiled designs for a $21.5m expansion and renovation at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis, US.

The renovation will include the 34,000ft² Nelson Cultural Center, which incorporates Swedish and Nordic design elements.

The addition will feature a glass-enclosed reception lobby with an art gallery, studio, office areas and a 325-seat event space.

The building will employ many water and energy-efficient designs and is expected to receive LEED Gold certification.

Renovation plans include repurposing 10,000ft² in the mansion's lower level, improving accessibility to the mansion and landscaping the campus grounds.

Work will begin next year and is scheduled to complete in 2012.
