New York University in the US has unveiled plans to build a 38-storey hotel and faculty residence as part of plans to increase the size of the university.

The slender tower will be made with glass and concrete and will be 40% taller than the three adjacent towers.

The university will present the plans to the community board and apply to the Landmarks Preservation Commission for permission to construct the building this year, it said in a statement.

The new project is part of the university's plans to expand its campus by 40% over the next 20 years, according to wnyc.org.
