Crossrail has unveiled an updated design for the new Whitechapel Station in London, UK, intended to benefit passengers and local residents as well as save money.

The new design will incorporate a direct entrance on Whitechapel Road that will reduce the amount of excavation building work necessary.

The new design, by architects Hyder Consulting and BDP, will include a walkway alongside the concourse to provide a free pedestrian route from Durward Street on to Whitechapel Road.

The new plan will incorporate natural light and re-design the access and ventilation shafts around Whitechapel station to minimise the impact on local residents.

The height of the Cambridge Heath Road shaft will also be reduced and the Durward Street shaft will be split into two structures to have ventilation facing inwards.
