Global design practice Populous has been selected to design a new sporting hub in Datong, China.

The sports park will include a 30,000-seat stadium and an 8,000-seat arena as part of a wider scheme by the mayor of Datong to regenerate the old city and create a new city centre.

Populous senior principal Paul Henry praised Trade and Investment Queensland in Australia for building the government-to-government relations that helped the company secure the contract.

"Datong was a military stronghold for several dynasties, so the architecture of the new sports park features themes of strength and fortitude, while reflecting the numerous ethnic communities that built a resilient northern China," he said.
