The $250m project will add roughly 160,000ft² to showcase the Fisher collection of 1,100 paintings and sculptures.

The initial design concepts of the scheme will be unveiled in 2011, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.

Construction on the new wing will begin in 2013 and is scheduled for completion in 2016.
