Work has begun on the proposed redevelopment of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Australia.

Architect Sam Marshall, in partnership with the NSW Government Architect, has designed the modern building.

The A$53m (US$48.5m) upgrade will add more than 16,700m² to the existing building.

The redevelopment includes an accessible new entrance, a 120-seat lecture theatre, classrooms, and several educational, exhibition, event and retail spaces.

The scheme received funding from several government and private donors.

The project is scheduled to be complete in 2012.
