The Bank of America Plaza in Columbia has achieved Gold certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard for green building design.

The building is the first in South Carolina to earn 56 points in total, of which nearly half were scored in the "Energy and Atmosphere" category.

Factors considered during the certification include setting up new digital air volume controls, installation of variable speed drives on cooling equipment, wide lighting retrofits and a building management system to measure, monitor and control energy consuming systems.

The implementation of upgrades enabled the building to earn an Energy Star rating of 87.
