The C$30m (US$28.9m) centre will be located on the art gallery's current site and will serve as a symbol of the gallery's centennial year in 2012.

The three-storey structure will have 45,000ft² of space for exhibitions, art classes, research, studios and collection storage, according to the Winnipeg Free Press.

The current WAG Studio building will be demolished and the Inuit Art Centre will open in 2014.
