ALA Architects together with Marriott International and SRV Group, has won a competition to design a new hotel in Tampere, Finland.
The hotel tower will be located on the corner of Kalevantie and Yliopistonkatu streets, next to the Tampere Hall Congress and Concert Centre.
ALA Architects said the development’s scale is similar to the volume of the large concert hall.
Upon completion, the hotel will strengthen the connection between Tampere Hall and the main building of the University of Tampere.
ALA Architects said the new building redefines the entrance plaza as a lively urban plaza lined by the public functions of the ground floor.
The hotel links to the foyer of Tampere Hall with a green-roofed indoor passageway, hidden within the newly modified terraced garden between the main hall and the entrance plaza.
Plans also include a ticket booth and a store, which will be situated at the Tampere Hall end of the connection, and a restaurant space at the hotel end.
The 22m² rooms will feature spa-like bathrooms and multi-functional event space on the top floor.
The structure’s facades will be covered with twisted, vertical white fibre concrete slats that visually connect the hotel with Tampere Hall and also act as solar screens.
ALA Architects said the asymmetric geometry of the slats frames the views from the hotel rooms and the slats also mirror the light-coloured, narrow, vertical facade of the university main building.
