Atkins has been selected by Al Habtoor Group to provide multidisciplinary design services for the development of three luxury residential towers and a retail podium totaling 395,000m² in Dubai, UAE.

The project will be a key part of Al Habtoor City, a major new mixed-use development next to Sheikh Zayed Road.

Atkins will be responsible for providing architectural, structural, MEP and ground engineering design services.

The scope of the project includes two 75-storey residential towers and a third 52-storey tower, which will together house up to 1,460 apartments and 11 penthouses with leisure facilities for residents.

Atkins has completed the concept design stage for the project and is currently undertaking detailed design, which will be completed in 2015.

Each penthouse will have its own private sky garden and swimming pool, while the two taller blocks will include a four-storey penthouse incorporating over 3,000m² of living space.

Atkins principle design architect Kourosh Salehi said the design of the project for Al Habtoor was inspired by early 20th century art deco architecture as the client is looking for classical elegance with efficient contemporary overtones.

"The need for high-quality landscaping and public realm has also been of particular interest to Al Habtoor," added Salehi.

"Great care has been taken to achieve a harmonious design that responds to the immediate context and environment, in order to encourage greater public participation within this special setting."

Al Habtoor’s podium retail facility is intended to reduce residents’ reliance on their cars.

Atkins director of architecture Shaun Killa said the project will be a landmark development for Al Habtoor city.

"Its vision is to set new standards in luxury development, while ensuring the project is both environmentally sustainable and commercially viable," added Killa.

"The launch of Dubai Water Canal has added a completely different aspect to the project, enabling Al Habtoor City to become one of the city’s go-to destinations where people can live, work and play."

Other components of the Al Habtoor City mixed-used project will include three hotels and a water-themed theatre.
