HARBORcenter Development, the development firm affiliated with the Buffalo Sabres, is planning to break ground on the new $172m mixed-use development in Buffalo, New York, US.

The mixed-use development, dubbed HARBORcenter, will be developed on the Webster Block, a 1.7 acre city owned site situated near First Niagara Center in Buffalo.

After completion, HARBORcenter will feature two new ice rinks, a 200-room hotel, a two-storey restaurant, street level shops and a five-level parking deck.

The recreation and youth training facility will feature two NHL ice sheets, with the one ice sheet having a seating capacity for 1,800 people and the other with seating capacity for 200 people.

The facility will have locker room spaces for both ice sheets and will be used for public skating, tournaments, clinics, youth training and occasional team practices for the Buffalo Sabres.

Plans also include a Center of Excellence, which will be part of the ice facility and will feature meeting rooms in addition to youth and adult training facilities.

Buffalo Sabres chief development officer Cliff Benson said that groundbreaking on HARBORcenter is an important step in the development of Buffalo and its waterfront.

"When the facility opens, it will become a premier training ground for youth hockey players and coaches and, coupled with the hotel and retail components, will be both an economic and social asset to our community for decades to come," Benson said.

Populous is serving as the architect for the project while GSB is the associate architect and M. A. Mortenson Company is acting as the construction manager.

Populous principal and project manager for HARBORcenter Wayne London said, "The design of HARBORcenter compliments the historic architecture of Buffalo’s canal district while introducing modern architectural materials and elements, including glass and geometric volumes clad in metal panels," London said.

The ice rink, restaurant and retail components of the project are anticipated to open in September 2014, while the hotel is expected to open in the spring of 2015.
