City Creek Reserve and Taubman Centers have opened City Creek Center, a two-storey shopping mall that forms part of a $1.5bn mixed-use development on a 23-acre site in Salt Lake City, Utah, US.
The 700,000ft² shopping centre features a retractable roof, a 140ft skybridge over Main Street, a 1,200ft long recreation of the historic City Creek, two 18ft waterfalls and three fountains.
City Creek Center also features a prehistoric-themed children’s play area located in the Food Court, a sidewalk snow-melt system, an outdoor fireplace and an airline flight monitor.
ZGF Architects designed the overall project’s residential towers and Callison Architects designed the shopping centre in partnership with Hobbs and Black.
Callison’s architect and principal on the project Stan Laegreid said the development was conceived as an urban environment with outdoor streets and landscaping integrated with the mixed-use components of residential and office.
"Due to the open nature of the retail streets and the incorporation of the downtown street grid, the development feels like a community within the city rather than a conventional shopping center," Laegreid said.
The mixed-use development has 1.7 million feet squared of office space, 535 residential units and 5,000 underground parking spaces, as well as a 1km creek that begins at the north east corner and meanders in an S-shape across the property, ending at the south west end.
Landscaped pedestrian promenades, retail shops, three waterfalls and a fountain with 50ft jets flank the creek.
The retractable glass roof allows climate-controlled shopping all through the year and provides cover during bad weather.
The shopping centre’s skylight has been designed to cradle into a tucked position so it is invisible when it is open.
The City Creek Center has secured LEED stage 2 silver certification while the project’s three residential buildings and two office buildings have secured gold certification.
