City of Edinburgh Council has invited bids for a contract worth £80m to build 800 new homes in the Pennywell / Muirhouse area of Edinburgh, Scotland.
The project aims to deliver the new homes across a 14 hectare area; the development will also include roads, public spaces and other facilities.
City of Edinburgh Council director of services for communities Mark Turley said the development is a housing-led regeneration opportunity that will boost the local economy by providing new jobs in the construction industry, as well as supporting local businesses.
"The development provides the council with the opportunity to unlock private investment, provide a mix of new housing and create a sustainable development for the area," Turley said.
The winning developer will work according to the city council’s masterplans, Planning Permission in Principle consents and the Pennywell / Muirhouse Design Guide.
Construction on the site is scheduled to commence in 2013 and the new homes are expected to ready by 2014.
The contract is part of the second phase of the council’s 21st Century Homes programme, which will result in up to £170m of council-led investment in the regeneration of the Gracemount, North Sighthill, Pennywell / Muirhouse, Leith Fort and Greendykes areas of Edinburgh.
The programme will see the construction of 1,400 mixed tenure homes across the capital over the next eight years.
Half of the homes planned to be built in Pennywell will be affordable homes, with the rest intended for sale and rent in the private sector.
