Bawabat Al-Shamal Real Estate Company (BASREC) has started construction on the second phase of the $1.64bn Doha Festival City retail and entertainment project in Qatar.
Phase two of the project will feature a new mall, which is claimed to be the biggest in Qatar and is expected to open in the first quarter of 2016.
The second phase will also feature a major entertainment component, hotel and conference centre, and motor showrooms.
The entire project will spread across a 433,847m² site north of Msheireb’s Doha with a leasable area of 260,000m².
After completion, the proposed Doha Festival City will have four interior zones including the Water Concourse, Garden Promenade, Rainforest Boardwalk and Fashion Galleria.
Phase one of the project was started in 2011 with the construction of a new 32,000m² store for Swedish furniture firm IKEA, which opened in March 2013.
The first phase was constructed by a joint venture between Qatari Arabian Construction and Amana Qatar Contracting.
BASREC, which is supplying the land for the project, is a joint venture of four companies including Dubai-based Al-Futtaim Real Estate Services, Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Aqar Real Estate Development & Investment and a private Qatari investor.
Doha Festival City development director Greg Douglas believes the project’s portfolio of shopping, leisure, dining and entertainment options will deliver a new experience to residents and visitors.
DP Architects created the overall design for Doha Festival City while Arab Engineering Bureau is serving as architect for the project.
MACE International is project manager and EC Harris is quantity surveyor and cost consultant.
