AEG and MGM Resorts International have unveiled details of a new $350m sports and entertainment arena to be built in Las Vegas, US, designed by the architectural firm Populous.

The 20,000-seat arena will be built near the heart of the Las Vegas Strip and adjacent to the I-15 corridor.

Developers expect to break ground on the arena in April 2014 while the facility is planned to open in early 2016.

After completion, the arena is expected to host concerts, boxing, mixed martial arts, awards shows and professional basketball and hockey events.

The arena will be the centerpiece of efforts to revitalise Las Vegas Boulevard between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo resorts.

Populous has worked with the project owners and their project manager, ICON Venue Group, to design the arena, which will link the contrasting influences of Las Vegas – the desert and Spring Mountains to the west and the Las Vegas Boulevard to the east.

The new arena will feature a glass façade, balconies, an exterior performance stage and a sleek exterior.

The 145ft-high arena, which is expected to secure LEED Gold Certification, will feature several seating offerings and hospitality areas for entertaining and private events.

Post completion, the arena will house various bunker clubs, bunker suites, in-bowl sponsor zones, VIP drop-off zones with private lobbies, as well as an 85ft-high atrium and an array of exterior balconies.

The exterior of the arena will have solid skin to address the intense desert sun on the south and west sides.

Populous senior principal and a lead designer of the arena Brad Clark said the arena will be an extension of the Strip’s "high energy" and the company’s job with the design was to stay authentic to that spirit.

"The design of the arena ensures we will create a truly striking entertainment venue for Las Vegas – representing the colour, drama and excitement the city exudes," Clark said.
