Architecture firm Gensler has secured a contract to design The National Bank of Abu Dhabi’s (NBAD) new global head office in the new Abu Dhabi Central Business District on Al Maryah Island.
Under the contract, Gensler will provide design and supervision consultancy services including architecture, interior design, landscape design, engineering and site supervision.
The new 67,300m², 31-storey building will be situated on a site within the Al Maryah Master Plan, facing both the waterfront and a main access road.
The building will feature commercial office space, a hub bank, tower lobbies, trading floors, an auditorium, a conference centre and a cafeteria.
Gensler said that the building is designed around a symmetrical central core that displays an axial relationship between the waterfront and main vehicular road.
The overall massing of the structure will be divided into two thin towers emphasising verticality and slenderness.
A key element of the design concept was to compose a facade to reflect the presence of a well-established bank, within the context of contemporary society.
Gensler plans to cover the building with vertical fins that are used to extenuate the towers and create an exterior that will respond to the environment due to the varied fin rotations.
The fins will modulate light and provide solar protection during the day, while in the evening they provide the illusion of a streaming glow.
NBAD deputy group chief executive Abdulla Mohammed Saleh AbdulRaheem said that the new global head office will meet the requirements of the company’s expansion plan.
"The combination of premium business, retail and leisure facilities on Al Maryah Island, coupled with clear focus on infrastructure, logistics and transport means that we are confident our customers will welcome this move," AbdulRaheem said.
