Kemper Development Company (KDC) has broken ground on its $1.2bn expansion of The Bellevue Collection in Wasington, DC.
The Bellevue Collection is a shopping destination that is located in the Seattle suburb of Bellevue.
As part of the mixed-use expansion programme, the work has already begun on the 1.5 million ft² expansion of Lincoln Square, which will open by 2016.
The remaining five million ft² expansion will be carried out at Bellevue Square shopping centre.
The expansion of Lincoln Square will involve adding 700,000ft² of class-A premier office space, 177,000ft² of retail, dining and entertainment space, a 244-room boutique hotel and 250 high-rise rental residences.
In addition to rental space, there will be chef-inspired restaurants, upscale entertainment venues, a contemporary lobby, green rooftops, expansive Great Room for meetings, and a sky bridge to connect the Lincoln Square with Bellevue Square.
KDC CEO and board chairman Kemper Freeman said the company is releasing four different kinds of commercial real estate at the same time from office buildings, hotels, retail and restaurants.
"This represents a 50% expansion of everything we have built over the years at The Bellevue Collection; this will truly enhance the business district of downtown Bellevue," Freeman said.
US-based GLY Construction president and CEO Jim Karambelas said: "The Bellevue Collection expansion is a testimony to Kemper Development's continued commitment to a vibrant mixed-use environment, which will provide tremendous vitality and prosperity to the Bellevue community and entire region for decades."
Sclater Architects LEED AP principal Alan D Sclater said the Lincoln Square expansion will strengthen Bellevue's thriving downtown.
"The design of the project invites purposeful, meaningful connection among those who call downtown Bellevue home, whether they spend the day in an office, make the city their preferred entertainment and retail destination or choose it as their place of residence," Sclater said.
