Sweden-based NCC has started the €175m Matinkylä Metro Center project in Espoo, Finland, which includes the construction of a shopping mall and a public transport hub in Matinkylä in the Greater Helsinki area.
The project also includes the construction of a new public transport hub, which will feature a metro station and a bus terminal that are integrated into the shopping centre.
Matinkylä Metro Center project will feature around 25,000m² of leasable retail space and 600 parking spaces for visitors.
After completion, the shopping centre will house more than 200 different shops and other services.
The shopping centre is expected to be completed in summer 2016 while the new metro station and the bus terminal are planned to be completed in 2015.
The number of parking spaces at the shopping centre will be increased to 3,000 spaces, including 350 park-and-ride spaces.
NCC Property Development business area manager Carola Lavén said together with the existing shopping center Iso-Omena, the Matinkylä Metro Center will form one of the biggest shopping centres in Finland.
NCC will carry out the project in a joint venture with Finland-based property developer Citycon.
Under the three phase project, the leasable retail area of Iso Omena will be increased by about 25,000m² to more than 75,000m².
Citycon senior vice president of development and sustainability Marko Juhokas said with the metro line, Matinkylä will become an important transport hub for the whole of southern Espoo.
"Around 35,000 passengers will pass through the metro centre every day. This will create an additional daily customer flow which will further enhance Iso Omena’s position in Espoo," Juhokas said.
