Nebraska Medical Centre (NMC) and the University of Nebraska Medical Centre (UNMC) have broken ground on the new outpatient centre on the midtown campus at Village Pointe Medical Centre in Omaha, US.

The project is located near the intersection of 41st and Emile Street, and has been designed by HOK, which is working with RDG and MCL to oversee the construction.

The $70m Lauritzen Outpatient Centre (LOC) will have more than 170,000ft² of new clinical, research and educational space, whereas the Village Pointe Outpatient Surgery Centre will add 42,000ft² of space to the medical centre campus.

"It will be a home for extraordinary patient care, education and research. That's what this medical centre is all about."

The four-storey LOC facility will include the Fritch Surgery Centre, a suite of ten operating rooms designed for outpatient procedures, of which four rooms will be used for opthalmic surgery affiliated with the Truhlsen Eye Institute.

NMC Clarkson regional health services president Bruce Lauritzen said: "We wanted to improve the healthcare experience for patients here, and we believe this new centre will do that in ways we could only imagine before.

"It will be a home for extraordinary patient care, education and research. That's what this medical centre is all about."

The LOC will also house a number of outpatient clinics, which are currently located in different areas around the medical centre campus.

Out of the building's four floors, the top floor will be occupied by UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation research laboratories and educational space. It will also include a new centre for telemedicine to provide a hub for teaching and outcomes research related to telemedicine.

NMC, UNMC Physicians and Bellevue Medical Centre chief medical officer Harris Frankel MD said: "When we look at what sets our medical centre apart, it's our three missions working together: patient care, education and research.

"The Lauritzen Outpatient Centre serves all three missions and as a result, better serves our patients and our community."

The LOC is expected to be completed by the fall of 2016, while the Village Pointe Outpatient Surgery Centre is scheduled for 2015.
