A consortium comprising Obayashi and HBK Contracting has won a QAR2.5bn ($687m) construction contract from real estate developer Msheireb Properties for the third phase of Msheireb Downtown Doha project in Qatar.
Phase three covers a 310,000m² development and will include construction of 14 buildings that are up to 22 storeys in height as well as four basement levels of parking spaces which can house 2,200 vehicles.
The third phase will also feature two office buildings, 350 residential units spread across 11 buildings, four swimming pools, a mosque, a hotel, and hospitality and community facilities.
The 20,000m² retail space will feature 84 units and a 187-room hotel will also be built on an area of 30,500m².
Construction of phase three is anticipated to commence later in May 2013.
Msheireb Properties chief executive officer Hassan Al-Mehshadi said, "Joining a local company with an international contractor in a joint venture like this helps Qatari companies to further enhance their skills and capabilities and encourages the transfer of knowledge and expertise."
Msheireb broke ground on the $5.5bn Downtown Doha project in 2010 with a plan to complete the development in four phases.
In 2012, Arabtec secured the contract for the second phase of the project, while the first phase was awarded to Brookfield Multiplex Medgulf.
After its scheduled completion in 2016, the 31ha site will feature over 100 buildings with housing, workspace, cultural and community facilities.
