Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow, Russia, has unveiled plans for a new building in Gorky Park, designed by Rem Koolhaas’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA).

OMA, along with Russian practice Form Bureau, will renovate the Vremena Goda restaurant, a prefabricated concrete structure in Gorky Park, which has been abandoned since the 1990s.

The architect will create a 5,400m² museum that will host exhibition galleries on two levels, a creative centre for children, a shop, a café, an auditorium and offices.

OMA is planning to retain the feel of a skeletal structure by covering it with translucent polycarbonate, making the structure and interior visible from the outside.

Garage Center for Contemporary Culture founder Dasha Zhukova said: "Our move to Gorky Park marks an exciting new phase in Garage’s development."

The ground floor of Garage Gorky Park will house an experimental zone, which plans to host video and performance art, while the second floor will accommodate education facilities.

The building’s designers are planning to preserve original Soviet-era elements in the building, including a large mosaic, decorative tiles and brick, while adding new architectural elements.

Opened in 1928, the Gorky Park was designed by Soviet architect Konstantin Melnikov, who had also designed Garage’s previous home, the Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage.

Gorky Park, which spreads over 300 acres of land along the Moskva River in Moscow, is currently undergoing a renovation and regeneration project, of which Garage Gorky Park is a major part.

The renovated Gorky Park is scheduled for completion in 2013.
