Denmark-based schmidt hammer lassen architects has completed the design work for the new cultural home, Home of Staff, for Ningbo Labour Union in China.

The project site will be built at the centre of Ningbo New East Town and will be in the vicinity of New Ningbo Library, which was designed by schmidt hammer lassen architects.

Spread across an area of 100,000m², the project will feature two separate buildings with spaces for arts and performance, education facilities and offices, and a landscape park that is more than half a kilometre in length.

Entertainment venues at the building will include a three-screen cinema, a 1,200-seat performing arts venue, an exhibition hall, a union staff arts club and service centre, and training and learning facilities for up to 600 students.

The project will also offer sports and leisure spaces, such as an aquatic centre with pools, a basketball court, two indoor tennis courts, ten badminton courts, a gymnasium and a table tennis centre.

The two buildings will be linked with a series of retail courtyards and office spaces for the Ningbo Labour Union administration.

"Our design will embrace the landscape of the city's wetland setting and create synergy across all the services the Labour Union provides."

schmidt hammer lassen architects founding partner Morten Schmidt said the company designed the Home of Staff as a series of stepped building volumes that are linked by a landscape that rises from a central public park, to become a series of accessible green roof terraces.

"The volumes, which from the air appear like a pixelated image, rise up at each end and form two individual buildings that are connected by a sunken walkway and a series of park pavilions," Schmidt said.

The construction work on the Home of Staff is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.

When complete, the Home of Staff will provide support, health, education, culture and leisure facilities for almost three million Ningbo Labour Union members.

schmidt hammer lassen architects associate partner Chris Hardie said Ningbo Home of Staff and the City of Ningbo are an ambitious client.

"The client wants a project that defines the vibrant and lively city that Ningbo is. Our design will embrace the landscape of the city's wetland setting and create synergy across all the services the Labour Union provides to their members in a single holistic project," Hardie said.

In addition to the Home of Staff, schmidt hammer lassen architects has designed the headquarter of Ningbo Daily Newspaper Group in the city.
