Schmidt hammer lassen architects, in collaboration with aarhus arkitekterne, has won a competition to design a 30,000m² extension of the New Hospital Hvidovre in Denmark.

The design for the extension will include a new main entrance to the hospital, an emergency ward, a pediatrics ward and obstetrics and cardiology departments.

Green garden spaces will act as structuring focal points and connect all floors. They will also bring daylight to the lowest level, where the parking area and the new main entrance will be located.

The New Hospital Hvidovre extension is anticipated to be complete in 2019.

Schmidt hammer lassen architects associate partner Kasper Frandsen said the architectural idea is to develop the concrete base into a new interpretation while maintaining the orthogonal geometry.

"By understanding the building principles of the existing hospital we designed the extension to become a continuation of the existing structure," Frandsen said.

As the majority of visitors come by car, the new main entrance will be built to the level of the parking area, allowing visitors to enter into the building from below.

Schmidt hammer lassen architects partner Kim Holst Jensen said that the new entrance will make patients, relatives and employees feel welcome and accommodated.

"We created a new platform for arrival which angles towards the hospital in one smooth movement and leads below the building, where the green garden spaces will act as way-finding elements," Jensen said.

The new Hospital Hvidovre is the second hospital project schmidt hammer lassen and aarhus arkitekterne have won together in 2013.

In March 2013, the consortium won the competition to design the extension of the Helsingborg Hospital in Sweden.

As part of the Indigo Consortium, both the firms are working together on the New Aalborg University Hospital in Northern Jutland, Denmark.

The Indigo Consortium also features Creo Arkitekter and four consulting engineering firms Brix & Kamp, Oluf Jørgensen, NNE Pharmaplan and Royal Haskoning.
