US-based architecture firm tvsdesign has broken ground on the 700,000ft² Ningxia International Conference Center in China.
To be constructed in Yinchuan city, the facility will become the home of the five-day China-Arab states economic and trade forum, held annually.
tvsdesign said that the conference centre will be a symbol of cooperation between China and its nearby Arab States.
The conference centre will be enclosed in a unifying steel shell, whose curvilinear form is derived from stitching a square at the base with a circle at the top.
tvsdesign architects worked with the Arup structural engineering group to develop the screen structure for the building, which will feature an outer triangular grid surface covered on a hexagonal base grid to create a thin space frame featuring over 30,000 individual structural framing members.
The facility will have interior spaces around a central outdoor courtyard to host public events and outdoor events.
tvsdesign senior project architect Rob O’Keefe said that the architecture of the Ningxia conference center was inspired by ancient Chinese metaphors and Islamic artistic patterns, harmoniously merging elements of both cultures.
"We designed the facility around a central outdoor courtyard, an element that becomes the nucleus of the center, where people will meet, share knowledge and develop new ideas," O’Keefe said.
The new conference centre marks the company’s fifth convention and conference centre in China.
The new conference center is anticipated to open by September 2015.
In September 2012, tvsdesign had been selected by the Nanjing Hexi District in China to expand the southern side of Nanjing International Expo Center (NIEC)..
