Purdue University, located in Indiana, US, will today break ground on a project to expand its Ray W Herrick Laboratories.

The expansion will be carried out in several phases and will house the Center for High Performance Buildings, where research is focused on ‘smart building’ solutions.

Researchers are expected to use the facility to test and validate new building systems and concepts.

The facility is being built at an estimated cost of $23m, funded by grants from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and private donors.

Work on the first phase of the expansion project is expected to begin in July 2011 with completion expected in early 2013.
