US-based Walt Disney Corporation has announced plans to break ground on a new theme park in Shanghai, China on 8 April 2011.

The first phase of the Magic Kingdom theme park is expected to open in about five years.

The site is expected to house a theme park, two hotels, a retail and dining complex and a lake.

Disney is moving forward on the project nearly 16 years after beginning talks with the Chinese government about the development.
