US-based architect Evan Troxel has unveiled plans for a new aquatic centre at Riverside Polytechnic High School in California, US.

The centre’s design features a floating butterfly roof and undulating canopy over the bleachers, inspired by the front and side views of the butterfly stroke.

The centre includes a 50m pool, locker rooms, shower and dressing room area with a concession stand and ticket booth and a mechanical pump building, in addition to outdoor showers, a pool deck, storage and a coach’s office.

The entire structure is surrounded by a custom-formed, poured-in-place concrete panel wall enclosure that will secure the centre and also be used for signage and graphics.

The aquatic centre has been designed using tools like SketchUp and Bonzai3D for the building and Revit for the landscaping and hardscaping; the model was rendered in Artlantis.

Construction of the building is expected to commence in mid 2011.
