The University of California has announced that it will open a part of the 130-acre West Village mixed-used development on the Davis Campus in September 2011.

The UC Davis West Village incorporates a combination of energy efficient design features with a 4MW, high-efficiency SunPower solar power system making it a zero-net-energy development.

The first phase of the project includes apartment housing for 2,000 students, an education centre for Los Rios Community College, as well as recreation and study facilities.

The development will also house a village square surrounded by retail units and 343 single homes for sale to faculty and staff.

The Ramble Apartments and Viridian, two of the student housing components, will open in September 2011.

The community’s electricity demands will be met by a 4MW solar system comprised of rooftop solar power installations and solar canopies installed in parking areas.

West Village incorporates other energy conserving components, including solar reflective roof materials and radiant barrier roof sheathing, along with high-efficiency light fixtures, air conditioning systems and appliances.
