The Whitney Museum of American Art has broken ground on a new $720m facility in downtown Manhattan, New York, US.

The new building was designed by architect Renzo Piano in collaboration with Cooper, Robertson & Partners.

The facility will include 4,600m² of indoor galleries and 1,200m² of outdoor exhibition space, in addition to an expansive 1,700m² gallery for temporary exhibitions.

The design of the building includes a cantilevered entrance that forms an outdoor plaza.

The building will include an education centre, a 170-seat theatre, a study centre, a large art conservation lab, a library reading room and retail space on the ground floor.

Additional elements include a ground-floor restaurant and a top-floor cafe that will be operated by Union Square Hospitality Group.

The new museum has its opening date set for 2015.
