Manchester City Council has approved plans for a £110m university campus at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

The new campus will be located at Birley Fields, next to the Princess Parkway in Hulme, and will accommodate 6,000 healthcare and teaching students.

The new campus will include a sports hall, health centre, drama studios and student accommodation, and a 200,000ft² academic building will be built in the first phase.

The campus will have eco-friendly features that include green technologies such as force ventilation and solar-heated water, car park berths for electric cars and proposals for enhanced public and sustainable transport.

Sheppard Robson will design the building, taking over the design contract from original masterplanner John McAslan & Partners after being asked to come up with revised plans.

The design will combine diverse public spaces with retained and newly planted trees, strong sustainability credentials and innovative architectural design, and will become a landmark project for Hulme and the city, according to Sheppard Robson.

Construction on the university building will commence next year, with the first student intake expected by September 2014.
