Oxford City Council in the UK has approved plans to build two medical research buildings at a cost of £57m at Oxford University’s Old Road Campus by the Churchill Hospital in Headington.

The University of Oxford will demolish three existing buildings near Nuffield Hospital on Old Road to build a £20m Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine building and a £37m building to house the Institute for Rheumatology.

Construction groups including Mace and Laing O’Rourke are bidding for the project.

Construction work on the project is scheduled to begin in October 2011 and the opening of the building is scheduled for 2013.
