Internationally revered architect and engineer Santiago Calatrava has expressed interested in designing a new bridge over the Mississippi River, in the US, to replace the rubble that remains following one of the nation’s worst infrastructure incidents

The online version of the Star Tribune in the US says local real estate consultant Peter Kitchak has approached the architect, who has already sent his son to Minneapolis to inspect the site.

Kitchak has applied to the government to slow the tender process to allow for a high profile designer to come on board to create a new local icon.

Contractors have already been called for the rebuilding of the bridge. There have been several casualties at the site. KTM Constructors has dropped out of the running for the tender.

Calatrava, whose head office is based in Switzerland, designed Spain’s iconic Puente del Alamillo in Seville and the Milwaukee Art Museum in Wisonconsin among other famous structures.
