Henry VIII’s flagship, the Mary Rose, is to be housed in a new museum in Portsmouth, UK, after the project received a £21m lottery grant.

UK architects Wilkinson Eyre, Land Design Studio and Pringle and Brandon will work on the jewellery box-styled museum, which will help maintain the conditions required by the ship for its preservation.

The museum, which will be constructed using black timber planks, will also showcase objects found on board when the ship was lifted from the seabed near Portsmouth in 1982.

The structure will be prefabricated and lifted over the ship’s hull and will open in 2011.
