The design for a landmark structure called The Cloud has been unveiled by a team of architects and engineers. The structure is to commemorate London’s role as host of the 2012 Olympics.

The lightweight transparent tower, composed of a ‘cloud’ of inflatable, light-emitting spheres creates a 3D display in the London skies fed by real time information from all across the world. It will be visable from anywhere in London.

Visitors can climb onto the structure either on foot or using a bicycle.

Carbon neutrality can be achieved via energy collection through people climbing down and solar energy (on-site and off-site) photovoltaic cells as well as various energy saving strategies.

The structure has slender columns supporting the vast sphere, which is made up of minimal material and lined with cable net.

The inside of the structure will display 3D animated information feeds including energy use, spectator numbers, decibel levels, medal updates, transport patterns, mobile phone activity and internet traffic.

SENSEable City Laboratory, a new research initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is part of the project.

The Cloud‘s global ownership will be supported by networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter while Google has taken the onus for advertising on ‘YouTube’ and in search pages.

Designed to be part of the 2012 Olympic Park, the design team is also looking at other sites in London to position it.
