The UK Housing Ministry has allocated additional funding of £122m ($196m) to the council-home building programme.

About 73 local authorities will receive funding and grants, which brings public investment in the project to £500m ($806m).

Under the programme, 4,000 new homes will be built in an effort to resuscitate the UK’s struggling architecture profession.

Councils in the programme will offer apprenticeships and employ local job recruitment schemes that will lead to the creation of 7,500 jobs and about 100 new apprenticeship places.

Government spending for affordable housing will be the largest for at least two decades.
