Netherlands-based design firm MVRDV has presented its new plans for a water cube pavilion to be unveiled at the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu, South Korea.

The ocean-inspired structure’s interiors are illuminated by natural light which passes through four layers of glass, with water present between each layer.

The pavilion will be held up by the walls of the water basins from which it is constructed, where water basins will be arranged to resemble the world map.

The structure’s roof is made of 5m-high beams that span from the supporting web towards the roof’s centre, the North Pole.

The cube’s skin features solar cells that generate green energy to power the structure. The façade also features rolling curtains to control the penetration of UV.

The structure will serve as an exhibition and gathering space during the exposition.
