Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has formed a joint venture partnership with L Real Estate (LRE) to develop a new 168,000m² retail scheme in Saadiyat Island’s cultural district.
The project, known as ‘The District’, will be built in three levels all above ground and feature over 550 units to house luxury and fashion brands, department stores, home furnishing chains, art galleries and family entertainment venues.
The 17ha site will be located alongside three museums; Zayed National Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
Total floor area of the project will be 258,000m² with a built up area of 370,000m².
TDIC chairman Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan said, "This new retail destination – ideally sits among Saadiyat’s inspiring museums, beautiful landscape and coastal environment – will be a regional attraction and a highly prized sought-after location for Abu Dhabi’s communities and visitors when it opens by 2017."
Upon completion, the District will feature four zones, namely Luxury Street, Canal, Main Street and the Crescent Arcade.
The Luxury Street, Canal and Main Street zones will be located outdoors on two levels.
The Canal zone will feature a water channel running alongside a variety of food and beverage outlets built alongside water gardens, and a boardwalk with direct views of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
Main Street will feature shops from various fashion brands and outdoor cafes.
The three-storey Crescent Arcade, enclosed within the shopping complex, is designed to allow natural light to pass through transparent glass ceilings and water features.
Crescent Arcade will feature fashion stores, dining outlets and services, with the ground level extending below Luxury Street and Main Street, and the middle level having direct access to the Canal zone.
The top level will house a multi-screen cinema theatre, a kids entertainment zone and a food court.
Detailed design work for the project will commence in 2013, while construction is expected to start in 2014 and complete in 2017 to coincide with the opening of Guggenheim museum.
