Arabtec Construction has secured a AED5.7bn ($1.55bn) contract to build a themed entertainment resort in Aqaba, Jordan.

The 74ha project, which is being developed by an international fund, Red Sea Astrarium, will be built in the Aqaba special economic zone.

"We are pleased to be involved in this important project which will further boost the Jordanian economy and enhance the country’s attraction as a tourist destination."

Red Sea Astrarium will house four hotels with more than 2,000 rooms and retail, dining and entertainment waterfronts.

Facilities include a themed hotel, a five-star hotel, a family leisure hotel and a hotel for hosting meetings and conferences.

Arabtec said the waterfronts will overlook a man-made lagoon and form the cultural and social hearts of the Astrarium.

Plans also include a 4D cinema, adventure centre, theatre, water park and a Star Trek immersive experience.

Other facilities of the park include Hijazi and hanging gardens, a water feature and the Summit building, which will feature eight different entertainment venues.

Arabtec will work with the architects Callison and Rubicon Group, which will jointly plan and design the resort.

UK-based Arup will undertake the infrastructure design and engineering for the project.

Construction work on the project is scheduled to commence in Q3 of 2014 and complete by Q3 of 2017.

Arabtec Holding managing director and CEO Hasan Abdullah Ismaik said: "We are pleased to be involved in this important project which will further boost the Jordanian economy and enhance the country’s attraction as a tourist destination."

The company is currently working on two projects in Jordan which include the St. Regis Amman hotel and phase one of Saraya Aqaba development.
