Arabtec Construction has secured a AED243m ($66m) contract from Emaar Properties to build 253 new villas at its Arabian Ranches 2 development in Dubai, UAE.

The villas will be constructed within the Casa project at Arabian Ranches, with work scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2013 and is expected to complete in 16 months.

After completion, the project will feature three and four-bedroom Moroccan-style luxury villas, which are planned to be built on an overall plot of 132,000m².

Arabtec said that the new contract award means that its current backlog has reached AED21bn ($5.7bn) since the start of 2013.

The new contract award brings the total number of villas under construction by Arabtec for Emaar to 348 villas.

Arabtec managing director and CEO Hasan Abdullah Ismaik said the contract extends the company’s relationship with Emaar Properties.

Ismaik noted that more than 60% of the contracts Arabtec wins come from existing clients.

Earlier, Arabtec secured a AED174m ($47m) contract from Emaar to construct the Al Marassi villa project, which will feature 74 villas and 30 townhouses on the coast at Alexandria in Egypt.

Arabtec said it has constructed over 12,500 villas in the past ten years to provide homes for about 50,000 people.

The company has also built seven of the world’s 150 tallest buildings, including the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa.
