Skyworth Gongming mixed-use complex in China

UK-based engineering and design consultancy Atkins has won an international competition to design the Skyworth Gongming mixed-use complex in Shenzhen, China.

To be built on the site of the old factory of Skyworth, the complex will feature three interlinked blocks for residential, commercial and office uses.

Atkins will be responsible for concept design, master-planning and schematic design.

The Gongming district was previously an industrial area in Shenzhen and Atkins’ design will regenerate the site and create a complex in the new business district connecting to the city’s light rail system.

Atkins said that three curvilinear towers will rise to a height of 100m, 150m and 250m and will have a floor area of 302,000m².

The 61,000m² commercial area will feature a five-storey shopping mall and a three-storey shopping street complex with retail outlets, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Sustainable features of the development include various passive solar strategy devices, such as sun shading and screenings as well as the roof top urban park on top of the shopping mall.

Atkins senior design director in China KY Cheung said that Brownfield site regeneration is a very important approach in the development of existing cities.

"Unlike newly built cities, it is complex as it involves smart urban planning within the existing system, transport planning, architecture and landscape design as well as environmental issues," Cheung said.

Developer Huarong Real Estate selected Atkins to design the Huarong Hengqin Tower in Zhuhai, China in February 2012.
