Architecture firm BDP has won a competition to design a £43m headquarters building for UK Northamptonshire county council.

The council plans to centralise its Northampton-based staff from 12 headquarter buildings into one energy efficient, low-carbon building, which it claims will save £54m in costs.

The new headquarters building will be situated on Angel Street, which was previously used as council staff car park.

After completion, the building will have two blocks, which will feature a garden quadrangle, social hub including meeting areas, touchdown areas and other collaborative spaces.

The building’s entrance will overlook a newly created public square, and will lead to a four-storey atrium reception and street.

According to the plans, the facades of the buildings will be clad with vertical copper fins, which will control solar gain and provide a new colour and texture to the exterior, when viewed from acute angles.

"Dubbed Project Angel, the development is expected to secure a BREEAM Excellent rating."

BDP said the design will also maximise natural light and ventilation, and will create a visual connectivity between the floors, garden quadrangle and surrounding townscape.

The architecture firm will now work alongside the council to develop the design, which is expected to be submitted for planning permission in February 2014.

The council will then select a construction firm and work is anticipated to commence early in 2015 and finish in 2016.

Dubbed Project Angel, the development is expected to secure a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Northamptonshire county council leader Jim Harker said, "This project is so important not only in helping us rise to our significant and ever growing financial challenges but also in helping to give real support to Northampton town centre’s economy."
