Danish architectural firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled plans to redesign and expand the existing Givskud zoo in central Jutland, Denmark.

The project, called Zootopia, will feature a bike-safari through the 120ha park and will be designed to keep humans hidden from the animals.

BIG said in a statement that: "It is our dream, with Givskud, to create the best possible and freest possible environment for the animals’ lives and relationships with each other and visitors."

Under the redesign programme, the Zootopia’s building will be integrated with the surrounding landscape.

"It is our dream, with Givskud, to create the best possible and freest possible environment for the animals’ lives and relationships with each other and visitors."

While entering the zoo, visitors will have the option to enter a large central square giving them access to different areas of the zoo, or climb the building-landscape to view the general layout of the park.

The different areas of the zoo will be divided into the continents of Africa, America and Asia, presenting the animals from their respective continent. Each of the continents will be interconnected by a 4km hiking trail.

Givskud Zoo director Richard Østerballe was quoted by Archdaily as saying that the park’s transformation will benefit greatly from BIG’s fresh approach to design, one that has been characterised by the integration of nature and natural elements into cutting-edge, innovative architecture.

The first phase of the project is expected to be completed in time for the park’s 50th anniversary in 2019.
