UK-based architectural firm Broadway Malyan has won a competition to design a residential refurbishment scheme at Jagiellonian University Collegium Medicum in Krakow, Poland.

Broadway Malyan will deliver the 17,500m² student scheme for client Bouygues which is managing the project, that will be delivered through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.

Under the project, the architectural firm will refurbish three existing ten-storey accommodation blocks, originally constructed during the Soviet era, with a new façade design.

The project also includes partial refurbishment of a pavilion building housing educational and administrative facilities.

Plans also include construction of a range of new recreational and sports facilities, including a multi-purpose pitch, volleyball and tennis courts and a running track, on the 4ha site.

Large common rooms will house combined kitchen space, sitting rooms and leisure space.

The design also features additional shared facilities on each ground floor, with sitting areas and cafés near receptions.

Broadway Malyan said the project is currently going through a design review process as the basis of a building permit application scheduled for April 2014.

Broadway Malyan Warsaw-based director of architecture Robert Kaminski said, "The appointment is a further success for our strategy in Poland, which is aimed at growing our local team and widening our project portfolio across sectors, on the back of our strong reputation in the retail sector."

The architectural firm said it believes that PPP will be one of the most effective methods of raising the standard of existing, under-performing buildings in Poland, particularly in the student accommodation sector, which is "relatively underdeveloped and characterised by stable demand and low risk".

Broadway Malyan is currently involved in a number of other early-stage PPP projects, which are structured in varying ways, with public and private universities throughout Poland.
