Moscow expansion design concept competition

Capital Cities Planning Group (CCPG) has won a design concept competition in Russia to double the size of Moscow.

The CCPG team includes Urban Design Associates, John Thompson & Partners (JTP), Gillespies, Beasley Associates, Nelson Nygaard, Buro Happold, Stuart Gulliver and Group Ark.

Brian Evans of Gillespies was quoted by The Architects’ Journal saying that "The planning authority will now take the work of the nine teams currently on public exhibit at Gorki Park and begin work on a new plan for the City of Moscow."

The competition included design for the Moscow metropolitan area, the development of Moscow and the new federal government centre.

The group won the competition for its design for the new federal government centre and the winning proposal includes a new ‘City in the Forest’ for 1.7 million people.

Earlier this year, the Russian Federal Government revealed its plans to double the territory of Moscow to create a metropolitan federal district.

Moscow’s city planner Genplan designed an area of 155km² to the south-west of the city for a new federal government centre, intending to relieve the inner-city through the relocation of the capital’s major employer.

The new layout redevelops the 155km² to create a planned urban hierarchy served by a transit-orientated movement system.

CCPG beat off competition from teams that included OMA, Ricardo Bofill, RTKL and Diller Scofido + Renfro, following a six month-long selection process organised by the Russian Federation Council which wants to make Moscow 2.4 times its current size.
