Rafael Vinoly Architects has secured planning permission from Wandsworth Council in London, UK, for the first phase of the £8bn Battersea Power Station redevelopment in Nine Elms.
Battersea Power Station is one of the 27 major development sites located in Nine Elms on the South Bank.
Phase one of the project will feature two buildings of eight and 18 storeys to be built to the west of the power station building.
The first phase will also include 800 homes to be built on top of a commercial podium that will feature shops, restaurants, a gym, a hotel, a pool, a spa, a theatre, office studios and a new six-acre park.
Phase one of the redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2016.
Earlier in 2012, the Battersea power station site was acquired by a Malaysian consortium, which includes S P Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees Provident Fund, for £400m.
The overall master plan will cover approximately 940,000m² and include 3,500 homes and a 2.4ha park. The plan also incorporates the construction of two new Tube stops as part of the Northern Line Extension.
Wandsworth Council planning chairman Nick Cuff said that the site’s vast empty spaces will be gradually brought to life with new homes, a riverside park and a new commercial centre.
“Tonight’s decision is another important step towards extending the Northern Line to this site and comes just days after the Government announced it will underpin this vital infrastructure project with a £1bn loan guarantee,” Cuff said.
“The Tube link is the key to creating a total of 16,000 new homes and 25,000 new jobs across the entire Nine Elms on the South Bank district.”
Later phases of the development will feature new homes constructed alongside a new Tube station, riverbus pier, pedestrian squares and a whole new town centre.
